So, I have an interesting work-from-home job idea for you today.  I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard of this one myself, but after some research, I am thrilled with the potential this work-from-home career has. Scopist jobs from home is a bit of a moutful but it’s one of the highest paying and most stable work from home jobs out there.

That career is Scoping, and people who work in the Scoping field are known as a Scopist or a remote Scopist since you’ll be doing this job entirely from your home.  A Scopist works with Court Reporters to help transcribe documents relating to court proceedings.

Alright, now that we have that out of the way lets first take a more in depth look at what exactly a work-from-home Scopist does and how you can easily train for and find scopist jobs from home.

What is Work-From-Home Scoping?

A remote Scopist is responsible for editing transcripts for court reporters.  Pretty simple, but that’s it.  They are a necessary part of the court system and have been around for 30 years.  They use specialized transcription software, similar to what a medical transcriptionist might use, to transcribe the shorthand stenotype (what a court reporter uses during court proceedings) into a legible, and easy to read document.

Court reporters are responsible for the logging of court events and proceedings using a stenotype (Steno Machine) which they import into specialized transcription software.  Court reporters then hire a Scopist to help transcribe this data, and pay them for each page transcribed.

Why is Remote Scoping in Demand?

Court Reporters are paid based on how many pages they submit, so outsourcing editing work to a Scopist allows them to work faster, maximizing their earning potential.  This is the number one reason Scopists are in demand, and why the demand will only grow as time goes on.  It is also the reason why work-from-home Scoping is a high paying job opportunity that you can take advantage of with a little bit of training.

How Much Do Work-from-Home Scoping Jobs Pay?

Working as a Scopist means you’ll be the one creating your own work schedule and hours.  How much you make with scoping will entirely depend on you.  Part time work from home scoping jobs can pay $500 – $2000 a month, while full time jobs can pay up $4500 or more a month.  That’s college education income with a work-at-home job, not bad right?  Do a quick search online for jobs that require a college degree, and you’ll soon start to realize what a fantastic work online opportunity this is.

I always approach new home based job opportunities with a positive attitude.  I do my research, and make sure it’s a job which offers stable income and flexible hours.  I cover everything from how to make a few bucks online each day to how to make almost 6 figures working from home each year on my website.  Each job has to pass a quality assurance stage of sorts before it makes it to (thecouchcommute.com), and I am just as impressed with the earning potential remote Scoping jobs have as I am with other high paying remote jobs.

The reason I am so high on scoping as a home based career is mainly due to the demand as well as the low cost of entering the industry.  With no college degree required, and a minimal investment in training, you can get back what you invested in training a lot faster than paying off student loans that can leave you with crippling debt upwards of $100,000.  It has also been a steady and stable industry for 30 years, but it’s such a niche field it has largely gone unnoticed by the majority of people.  The lack of competition within this industry means there is plenty of work to go around, and will be for the foreseeable future.

The opportunity to earn income on par with bachelor-degree holders in a work-at-home job setting is hard to find, and that’s exactly what this career has the potential to offer.

Training for Scoping Jobs

So, maybe you’re wondering how you find work-from-home scoping jobs.  Well, you don’t need a college education for starters, and the only requirement is that you have training from a reputable school, and a few other intangible skills (eye for detail, ability to problem solve, self-motivated).  The option to train under a Court Reporter is also a valid way to enter the industry, but that can be difficult if you don’t know anyone personally.  Not many Court Reporters will take a stranger under their wing and spend months training them, but it is an option.

Scoping is not an easy job, and while it can be fun, you need the necessary skills if you intend to land clients.  Since it is such a unique field it will never be saturated, and your services will continue to be in demand.  Even people with college degrees can’t just pick it up and start working as a Scopist.  You need specialized training to work in this industry which ensures your qualifications will always be valued and there will never be a shortage of work.  If training to work remotely as a Scopist is something you’re interested in you can learn from one of the most reputable online scoping training schools around.  Internet Scoping School offers a free introductory mini course, and even if you’re on the fence I recommend taking it.  It’s totally free, so what do you have to lose?

You study at your own pace, and they teach you everything you need to know in order to find success as a Professional Scopist.  This means it is a perfect job for stay-at-home moms, stay-at-home Dads, people looking for a career change, or anyone looking for a great home-based job.  They have an in depth curriculum that is well reviewed, and well respected.  Should you choose to enroll, and put the work in, you’ll have no problems finding success as an at home Scopist.

Learn From Court Reporters

If you’re looking for an alternative training route you could study under a court reporter.  Essentially, you need to understand everything under the editing umbrella of court reporting.  How to read stenotype, shorthand, formatting, and many other detail oriented practices.  Everything a Scopist does needs to be done a specific way to meet court standards.

I’m not exactly sure how you’d go about finding someone to study under, perhaps if you have a relative or friend who works as a court reporter they may be willing to train you.  Either way, if you can make it happen this is a viable option.

It may take longer to learn everything with this method, as you’ll be at the mercy of another person time, and only able to learn when they are available to teach.

How Long Does it Take to Learn How to be a Scopist?

Well trained Scopists should expect to learn for roughly 6 – 8 months before acquiring their first clients, but you do learn at your own pace so it’ll vary from person to person and depend entirely on how much time you are able to dedicate towards studying.

Most graduates of the Internet Scoping School land their first clients the same week they graduate, and your starting salary is on par with a lot of other careers that require college degrees.

What Equipment Does a Scopist Need?

To work as a Scopist you need a desktop or laptop computer equipped with specialized scoping software.  Remember, this is an entirely home based business which means anything you have to purchase for your job will be fully tax deductible.  An internet connection is of course required, and a set of headphones suitable for listening to audio.  You don’t need to spend $200 on a premium pair of headphones, but a nice middle tier pair that won’t crackle or cut out when listening to audio is recommended.

Success Stories

There are countless graduates of ISS (Internet Scoping School) who have managed to build a successful career in the industry.  You can visit their website and see testimonials, but there were a few that really stood out to me.

From Laid Off to $4500 a Month Working-from-Home

Darice found himself out of work at 50 years old.  After hitting up his family constantly for extra cash he knew that he had to make a change.  He completed the ISS course while working two jobs just to keep things together, and now finds himself earning up to $4500 a month, and $1500 a month during the slower times.  Oh, and he found his first client through the Internet Scoping School job board.

Stay-at-Home Mom Earns $3000 a Month Working-From-Home as a Scopist

Robin left the insurance industry after 22 years to be a stay-at-home mom.  She was pregnant and needed to find a flexible career that she could do remotely.  She was studying court reporting but decided to move on from that after learning about Scoping careers.  To date, she has worked alongside 35 court reporters, and is able to earn $3000 a month on the high end.

Final Thoughts

Well, there you have it.  A fantastic work-from-home career that can offer high paying wages with flexible work hours, hello 2 hour lunch breaks.

Like other home based jobs there are certain things you need to keep in mind.  It does take a lot of self motivation to work from home.  At home jobs sound great on paper, but some people can have trouble keeping a schedule, and staying on task.  Don’t get me wrong, I will never go back to a horrible morning commute, or a stuffy office.  Working-from-home has brought freedom, and joy into my work life by allowing me to enjoy my family life when I want.  However, there are a few things you can do to avoid a bad work at home experience.

Manage Your Time Well

You’re the one responsible for managing your own time, and there isn’t a boss or supervisor breathing down your neck to make sure you’re doing work.  Set a schedule and stick to it.  You can use a whiteboard or a corkboard, even post-it notes to manage work flow and design your day.  My wife uses a bullet journal to plan out her week, just find a method that works for you.

Get Outside

Make sure you get outside into the fresh air.  Even if it’s just a quick walk around the block.  Working from home can feel very isolating at times, and getting out for just 15 minutes each day can stave off depression associated with isolation.

Change Your Scenery

With most work at home jobs you can work anywhere, so why not take advantage of that?  A couple of times a week I’ll grab my laptop and take a 10 minute walk to the nearest Library.  I set up shop, and work there for a few hours.  You could head to a local coffee shop, or if you have a backyard why not install a WiFi extender in your house so you can take your laptop into the sunshine and work outside all day.  I mentioned in one article how I was able to work at the beach while we were on vacation, and it’s in those moments where I realize how amazing work-from-home jobs can be, or I guess I should say work-from-anywhere jobs.

Facebook reviews were great, and the few other blog posts I found also talked about the in depth nature of the course and it’s ability to train you well and even help find you the clients you need to be successful.  Many real people have found success after graduating from their courses, and after my research I can say it is both a legitimate program and a legitimate work-at-home career.
